Editorial: A hunting-free day

The abomination known as Sunday hunting is before the Virginia General Assembly again. This time the perennial measure is said to have a good chance of passage as the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries is behind it.

 

The main argument in favor of the legislation is that the number of hunters is dropping and this sport is in danger. “Hunter recruitment” is one of the terms used to describe the issue; “opportunity to hunt” is another, as the measure would open up the full weekend to hunters.

 

The bill has certain restrictions. No deer hunting with dogs; no hunting within 200 yards of a house of worship; no hunting on public lands.

 

The days of blue laws—the rules prohibiting activities that mar the Sabbath—are long behind us. But is it wrong to save one day each week for people who wish to enjoy the outdoors without fear of becoming part of the harvest?
