EDITH LOORIE ROBY

Edith Loorie Young Roby, 94, of Gloucester, Va., died peacefully at home on Friday, Sept. 6, 2013.

Born on Oct. 1, 1918 in Apple Grove, Ohio, to the late Matilda and Emmett Young, she grew up in Ohio and West Virginia. She married the late Major Albert Barnes Roby (USAF-retired) on Sept. 18, 1953 in Miami, Fla. She traveled across the U.S. and Europe as part of her life as a military wife before retiring with her husband in Gloucester. She was a physician’s assistant in her early life and later worked in the education publication field. Most of all, she was a dedicated and patient wife, loving mother, and affectionate, playful Meemaw.

She is survived by her daughter and devoted caretaker, Nancy Lee Saunders and her husband Joe of Gloucester; son, Wilmer Roby of Raleigh, N.C.; daughter, Marion Roby Lugar and her husband Mike of Austin, Texas. Her grandchildren were the special joy of her life and include Travis, Kasey, and Hillary Saunders, all of Gloucester; Michael Lugar, Katie Lugar Palmer and her husband Aaron Palmer of Austin. She is also survived by her brother, Emmett “Bud” Young and his wife Barbara of Colorado, and her sister, Edna Hesson of West Virginia.

The family wishes to thank Mary Katherine Stewart for her gentle care of their mother in her final years.

A private service was held on Monday, Sept. 9 at the Windsor Gardens mausoleum in Dutton.

Memorial donations may be made to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Andrews Funeral Home of Gloucester, was in charge of arrangements.
