Edgar Kenneth (Ken) Mason, age 79, of Urbanna, Virginia, passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 1, 2024, in Richmond, Virginia. Ken was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, the only child of the late George Mason and Elizabeth (née Paterson) Mason. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Laurie Branch Mason; children, Tristan Mason of San Diego, California; Shaina Mason of Alexandria, Virginia, and Dominique Smith of Davidson, North Carolina. His mother-in-law, Ruth Yonkers of Norton Shores, Michigan, also survives him. Ken’s youth was spent developing his work ethic – as a master printer; his love of cars – as a one-time Formula Four racecar driver; his love of the water – as a fisherman and boater; and his love of his family – as a son, husband, father, cousin, nephew, and grandson. Ken relocated to Virginia from Edinburgh in 1979. He would meet Laurie in Virginia, where they spent their summers sailing their catamaran on the Chesapeake Bay together. A job opportunity took him to Orange County, California, where he raised his family. Shortly before his retirement, he reconnected with Laurie. They married, and he relocated back to the Virginia countryside, where he spent his days tending to his garden and spending time with his family and beloved dogs, Tess, Tanner and Maddie. Through his final days, he kept his British wit and charm about him. He thanked every nurse, doctor, assistant, and worker who assisted him with his around-the-clock care. He left this world as he came into it—with a deep appreciation of love and life.
A private celebration of life will be held at a later date.
