E. EUGENE CALLIS III

E. Eugene Callis III of Mathews, died unexpectedly Dec. 3, 2017, at Memorial Regional Medical Center from complications of surgery.

Mr. Callis served the residents of Mathews County for 41 years as Clerk of Circuit Court, retiring in 2012. Mr. Callis exemplified a devotion to public service and to the integrity of his office. He was a friend to the people of Mathews County and enjoyed helping people.

Mr. Callis was a member of Gwynn’s Island Baptist Church. He will be remembered for being a wonderful husband, brother and for being a truly good colleague, mentor, and friend, generous with his time and judicious in his influence.

He is survived by his wife, Anne Mullen Orrell; brother, John Lee Callis; sister, Mary Ann Davis and J.D.; extended family, Michael and April Taylor; special friends, Frances Ellis and Virginia Jones; his faithful dog, General Beauregarde, and nieces, Kim Callis, Pam Callis, Emily Wills, Melissa Welch and Jana Copley.

Graveside service conducted by the Rev. Ed Jordan will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 7, 2017, at H. C. Smithers Cemetery. Friends are asked to assemble at the cemetery.
