Dukes’ win streak ends with Woodside but team is 2-1 on week

The Gloucester High School varsity baseball team’s undefeated season came to an end Friday in the middle of a three-game home stretch that saw the home nine log wins against Denbigh and Bethel that bookended a loss to Woodside.

The Dukes dominated Denbigh last Thursday, as junior Kirkland Owens continued his hot streak on the mound. Owens would carry a no-hitter into the penultimate inning, losing his bid on a bloop single up the middle.

The Dukes jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when Brendin Bard scored off a defensive error after he legged out an infield single. Owens, who walked one in the opening frame, rebounded in the second by striking out two in the process.

A pair of singles, a sacrifice bunt, and a wild pitch left the Dukes with two runners in scoring position in the second frame.
