Dukes’ season ends; MHS travels to Essex

The regular season for high school football is over, and while Gloucester ended the year with a winning record, the Dukes did not make it into post-season play.

A look at the final VHSL Top 20 rankings for 5A schools shows Gloucester (6-4) in ninth place behind Cox High School (also 6-4), which earned the eighth and final slot in the regional playoffs. Woodside (9-1) was the lone Peninsula District team to advance, finishing fifth among 5A schools. They were scheduled to face fourth-seed Princess Anne.

Mathews, meanwhile, will continue to play this Friday. The Blue Devils (2-8, eighth seed in Class 1, Region A) will travel to Essex High School (9-1) on Friday for a 7 p.m. game against the top-seeded Trojans. ...
