Dukes place second in holiday tournament

The Gloucester High School varsity boys’ basketball team got its fourth win of the season in the Bayport Holiday Tournament last week at Tabb High School.

In their opening game, the Dukes surprised Poquoson by beating the Group AA team 67-59. After three quarters of fairly even play, Gloucester outscored Poquoson 25-16 in the final period to get the win. A.J. Hamilton led the Dukes with 22 points and Davonte Smith contributed 15. Chris Morgan and J.B. Bennett had nine each.

The win disrupted the tourney’s usual championship game pairing between the Islanders and Tabb and instead pitted the Dukes against the Tigers last Thursday. The game was close through the first half which ended with a 29-29 tie.
Gloucester stayed with the top-ranked Tigers but got into foul trouble and the Tabb shooters were hot at the line. The hosts pulled away in the fourth quarter to win the tournament 57-45. Smith and Ryan Wilson struck for two three-point shots each and led the Dukes&rsquo...
