Dukes open season against Warriors

The Gloucester High School varsity football team opens its 2015 campaign at 7 o’clock tonight against the Kecoughtan Warriors at Darling Stadium in Hampton.

“We’ve got a tough matchup coming up with Kecoughtan,” said GHS head coach Brandon Kelley, who expects the Warriors to be top contenders in the Peninsula District. “They’re big up front, they’ve got a good quarterback and defensively they get to the ball quick,” he said. The returning Kecoughtan QB threw for over 2,000 yards last season and 28 touchdowns.

The Dukes got their final scrimmage tune-up done last Thursday in a lightning-shortened workout with Warhill and Parkview. “We got two quarters in before we had some lightning. We would have liked to run all the kids through but the safety of the kids comes first. We’ve got a lot of things we’ve got to fix, and we did some things well. All in all I thought we did well,” Kelley said.
