Dukes on the diamond – Lady Dukes fall in first round of regional tournament

After taking the runner-up spot in the Conference 10 Tournament, the Gloucester High School varsity softball team ended the season with a 2-1 loss to Hickory in the first round of the 5A South Regional Tournament on Monday. 

The Dukes beat Warwick, 6-0, last week to clinch a bid to the regional tourney. Morgan Haywood (16-2) tossed a three-hit shutout and Gloucester had 11 hits as they bested the Raiders for the third time this season.

Gloucester put three runs on the board in the first inning as Bridgett Motley and Macy Robbins hit back to back singles to lead off the game. After a sacrifice bunt and a walk, Kaleigh Arnett drove in Motley for a 1-0 lead. With two outs, Kirsten Green singled in Robbins and Victoria Mielnick to make it 3-0.

The Dukes added two more runs in the third when Haywood singled and Jessica Hogge doubled for a 4-0 lead. Green would later single in Hogge, and Hogge singled in the fifth and scored to put the game at 6-0.
