Dukes kick off gridiron season Friday

Gloucester High School kicks off the 2017 football season when the Dukes take on Woodside at 7 p.m. Friday in the GHS stadium. 

Gloucester is led this season by new head coach John Scalf, who headed up the Dukes’ defense last season. Scalf will look to improve on the 4-6 record Gloucester posted in 2016 under former head coach Brandon Kelly. 

Assisting Scalf are coaches Michael Murphy, Bubba Hooker, Jason Roane, Connor McNeil, Cory Beddingfield, Dorsey Hooker and Stanley Hundley.

Senior quarterback Isaiah Spencer is expected to do most of the play calling on the field. Spencer has been recruited by the University of Virginia, UVA-Wise, the College of William and Mary and the University of Richmond. 

Backing Spencer at the QB position will be freshman Thomas Conroy and sophomore Isaiah Lester.
