Dukes hold second seed in conference tournament

Gloucester High School varsity baseball players hold the second seed in the Conference 10 Tournament after losing a tie-breaker with top-seeded Menchville at Hampton High School on Saturday. 

The Dukes beat the Monarchs, 4-3, last Thursday to end the regular season. After Menchville’s last game, both the Dukes and the Monarchs stood at 14-4 overall and 5-1 in conference play, setting up the tie breaker on Saturday.

GHS senior Trey Fortner got the 4-3 win on the mound last Thursday. Gloucester trailed, 3-1, until the bottom of the sixth inning when the Dukes scored three runs. Junior Cody Shiflett knocked in the go-ahead run. Senior Jason Wood contributed a hit, two RBIs and scored two runs in the win. On Saturday, Gloucester lost to Menchville by the same 4-3 score. Senior Grayson Womble had a hit and two RBIs for the Dukes and junior Reese Oden contributed two hits and an RBI. Wood took the pitching loss.
