The Gloucester High School varsity Dukes (0-7, 0-8) sustained another Peninsula District football loss on Saturday but the junior Dukes have notched two wins in recent action.
The Gloucester varsity squad fell to host Denbigh, 28-3, on Saturday, with the Patriots putting up a touchdown in each of four quarters. Jackson Lowther once again prevented a shutout with a field goal for the Dukes. Tailback James Scott continued to be a bright spot for Gloucester and tallied more than 150 rushing yards in the loss. The Dukes face Phoebus at GHS Friday.
The Gloucester juniors topped their Denbigh opponents 17-8 on Monday at GHS. Fullback Cody Correll scored a touchdown for the Dukes as did quarterback Caleb Smith. Chris Lee added a field goal. The Gloucester defense produced five turnovers in the win, with Cody McDermott pulling in a pair of interceptions and Larry Bannister recovering two fumbles.
“We are so young this year, but they’re learning quick and finally coming together,” said Gloucester JV coach Ryan Wenner. Wenner only had five players return from his successful 2011 squad.
The junior Dukes (3-4) also beat Woodside, 20-16, on Oct. 15. “We were down early but got up late and the defense held them. The last couple of weeks they’ve refused to give up,” Wenner said of his players.
The GHS jayvees play at Phoebus at 10 a.m. Saturday.
