Dukes fall short against Bruins, 25-14

The Gloucester High School varsity football team dropped to 0-3 Friday with a 25-14 loss to visiting Bethel, but this time the Dukes were more competitive than in their first two outings. 

After Bethel went up 6-0 early in the first quarter, Brady Barefoot responded for Gloucester with a 42-yard scoring run. Watkins Yeager hit his first of two successful extra points of the night and the Dukes were up 7-6.

The lead was short-lived as Bethel scored on a long pass in the second quarter while the Bruins’ defense stifled Gloucester’s offensive efforts. 

In the third quarter, Bethel extended its lead to 18-7 before Martaine Morris returned a kickoff 95 yards to get the Dukes back in the game. Yeager’s kick was good and a win was still in Gloucester’s reach with the score at 18-14.  The Bruins added seven more points in the final period but the Dukes’ offense again failed to produce any points, and the game went to the visitors.
