Dukes drop key conference game to Bruins

The Gloucester High School varsity baseball team dropped to 10-4 overall and 1-1 in Conference 10 on Tuesday after a 2-1 loss at Bethel.

The Bruins (who hold a 9-3 record overall) tallied two runs in the first inning and kept the 2-0 lead until the fifth, when the Dukes prevented the shutout with a run. Jason Wood took the loss on the mound and contributed a hit.

Gloucester won its first conference game on Friday with a 6-3 victory over Nansemond River. Grayson Womble had a hit and two RBIs while Brent Lindsay, A.J. Hall, Cody Shiflett and Wood each contributed a hit.

Sophomore Cash Watkins pitched 4 1/3 innings for the win and senior Trey Fortner picked up the save in pitching the final 2 2/3 innings.

The Dukes beat Warhill by the same 6-3 score the previous day. Lindsay, Womble, Hall and Fortner all had two hits among 12 Gloucester hits on the day. Shiflett pitched the first three innings and senior Wood got the win by closing out the remaining four.
