Gloucester High School varsity football players closed the season with a disappointing 35-0 loss to Warwick at GHS on Friday. The Dukes ended the schedule with a 2-7 Peninsula District record and at 3-7 overall to finish in eighth place among the 10 PD teams.
Gloucester coach Sonny Merchant said poor offensive blocking left the Dukes scoreless in their final outing Friday. "The kids played hard the whole game but we couldn’t get anything going offensively up front. Aiden (Thompson) stayed disciplined in taking what they gave him but there were a lot of missed blocks and misreads."
"The defense did a better job, except for allowing some big plays. But they lacked the speed to be able to match up. They are a gritty team. They may not match up, but they play hard," Merchant said of his players.
