Drivers could face thousands in fines and fees if they skip tolls

Evading the toll plaza at the George P. Coleman Memorial Bridge may cost motorists big bucks if not addressed early on, and paid prior to entering the judicial process.

The numbers of toll violators are staggering, with 51 different individuals with multiple violations heard in Gloucester’s General District Court on July 15. One individual had 143 different cases coming before the court that day for failure to pay tolls.

According to Shannon Marshall, a spokesperson for the Virginia Department of Transportation, if a driver proceeds through a toll lane without paying, either electronically with an E-ZPass or with cash, a camera records the vehicle’s license plate. This image, she said, along with the lane, date and time the violation occurred, is sent to VDOT’s back office for processing.
