Dr. Sam Raymond Stanford Jr., 67, died on Saturday, Jan. 30, 2016, in Petersburg, Va., after a long illness.

A native of Gloucester, Dr. Stanford practiced medicine in Gloucester for approximately 20 years, and later in Virginia Beach and Richmond.

He attended Gloucester public schools and was a graduate of Frederick Military Academy, Randolph-Macon College, and the Medical College of Virginia.

Dr. Stanford was preceded in death by his father, Sam R. Stanford, and his mother, Catherine Gray Stanford.

He is survived by his son, Sam Raymond Stanford III; a sister, Nancy Stanford Saunders Pierne; his stepmother, Carmen R. Stanford, and a stepbrother, Col. Charles S. Dunston, USMC-ret.

A memorial service will be held at Bellamy United Methodist Church on Saturday, Feb. 6, 2016, at 1 p.m.
