DOROTHY OWENS WEST

Dorothy Owens West, 85, of Gloucester Point, died Sept. 11, 2013 at home surrounded by family.

Dorothy was a lifelong resident of Gloucester County and a longtime member of Gloucester Point Baptist Church.

Dorothy’s greatest contribution to life was her love for her children and grandchildren. Whatever she herself could not do for them she found someone who could. Dorothy’s four children never knew a day that they were not loved and cherished. She was committed to her children, grandchildren, brothers and sisters. Most important she was a devoted wife to her husband of 64 years, James Tyler West, who preceded her in death on April 8, 2013.

Dorothy was also preceded in death by her parents, John and Mamie Owens; sister, Bernice Erman; brothers, Thomas Owens, Morris Owens and Alton Owens, and son, Wayne Tyler West.

Dorothy is survived by her sons, Thomas Mitchell West (Doris) and James David West; daughter, Sherry Graves; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her sisters, Della Belvin, Ida Goswick and Helen Collier; and brother, James Owens.

Funeral services conducted by Pastor Bud Goude were held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 14, 2013, at Hogg Funeral Home, Gloucester Point. Interment followed in Rosewell Memorial Garden Cemetery. The family received friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 13, 2013, at the funeral home.

In memory of Dorothy, contributions may be given to Gloucester Point Baptist Church, P.O. Box 305, Gloucester Point, Va. 23062.

The family would like to express their thanks to the staff and volunteers of Riverside Walter Reed Hospice for the comfort and care they have given to Dorothy for these past months. Also, thanks to the staff of Riverside Walter Reed Hospital.
