Dorothy G. Elder, 94, of Newport News, beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully July 7, 2017, at the Gardens at Warwick Forest.

Mrs. Elder was born Jan. 3, 1923, to the late Richard and Florence Grimes in Richmond. She married Clyde D. Elder in 1944, and moved to this area in 1957. 

She worked as a bookkeeper at Riverside Hospital years ago. She was a longtime active member of Gloucester Point Baptist Church. In 2005, Mrs. Elder went to Warwick Forest, and there she enjoyed playing Bingo, sending and receiving cards, and the many friends she made there.

She served her family with great love and was unselfish in every way. She was a tiny lady who had tremendous faith, courage, commitment and compassion. Whatever she did, she did it wholeheartedly.

She was preceded in death by parents; her husband, Clyde D. Elder, and daughter, Shirley Cawthon Bailes.

She is survived by her devoted daughter, Judith Flynn and her husband William; grandchildren, Dawn Tew (Greg), Michael Cawthon (Laura), William E. Flynn IV (Keri) and Blair Petrillo (Nathan); great-grandchildren, Sydney, Lia and Gabriel.

Graveside funeral service conducted by the Rev. Bud Goude will be at 1 p.m. Friday, July 14, 2017, at Kenbridge Heights Cemetery, Kenbridge. Everyone is asked to assemble at the cemetery.
