DORIS T. BAYNES

Doris T. Baynes, age 91, of Gloucester, died Feb. 18, 2013 at her home.

Doris graduated in 1939 as Valedictorian from Curwensville Sr. High in Grampian, Pa. She went into the Army, and became a nurse through Reading Hospital School of Nursing. She served as Second Lieutenant in the Army Nurse Corps during World War II. She also served at Walter Reed Army Medical Center and McGuire Veterans Hospital.

After getting out of the Army, she moved to Fox Hill in Hampton where she worked for Dr. Bradley and was a faithful member of Fox Hill United Methodist Church. She later worked for NACA and then NASA. She retired and moved to Gloucester in 1983.

She was an active member of Olive Branch United Methodist Church and a faithful member of the church choir. She was a member of the Severn Republican Women, Gloucester County Republican Party, and the Gloucester 40. A philanthropist at heart, she contributed to the Gloucester Community Foundation, Gloucester-Mathews Free Clinic, Salvation Army, Believers Express, and Olive Branch UMC.

Doris was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Lois Thompson; her husband, Frederick Baynes; her daughter, Susan Hurst, and her sister, Adele Samchok.

Survivors include daughters, Jane “Jami” Henson and husband Richard, Marguarette “Margie” Guillette and husband Steve; grandchildren, Shawn Coyne, Coral Hutson, and Cody Henson; seven great-grandchildren; brother, Grant Thompson, and two nieces and a nephew.

A memorial service will be conducted by the Rev. Rita Staul at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 24, 2013, at Olive Branch United Methodist Church, 10833 Harcum Road, Gloucester, Va. A reception will follow in the church fellowship hall.
