Doris Evelyn Montgomery, age 98, of Hayes, died on Wednesday, April 30, 2025, with her family by her side. It was probably a beautiful day in Kenova, West Virginia, when the good Lord brought Doris into this world in 1927. Known to her family as “Tiny,” she was the eldest child of the late William Radford and Martha Hensley Smith. During her childhood, growing up on a farm, she sang with the trio “The Smith Sisters.” They sang all around the county and were even invited to sing at the state fair. In World War II, the family moved to Portsmouth, Va. She worked for C & P Telephone for 10 years, rising to supervisory level. During this time, through a chance meeting on a Greyhound bus, she met the love of her life, Graden, who was in the Navy. She commented that he deliberately picked the seat next to her, although there were many available. They kept in touch and later married on September 13, 1952. Their son, William, was born in late 1953. For the next 20 years, Tiny moved all around the U.S., including the states of Rhode Island, Massachusetts, California, Washington, and finally, Virginia. During this time, she attended Olympic College in Washington and ultimately worked in and retired from the Civil Service in Gloucester, Va., her home for the last 54 years. She was a great homemaker, a fantastic cook, a peerless seamstress, and a super mom and grandmother. She maintained close ties with her sisters and their families throughout her life. Tiny was preceded in death by her parents, endearing husband, Graden, loving sisters, Lora Adkins (Rosie), and Lois Shrader (Bibi), and brothers, Luther and Donald. She is survived by her son, William, and daughter-in-law, Rosalie; grandchildren, William Anderson and Rolan Montgomery (wife Darlyn), Mercy Young (husband Zach); eight great-grandchildren, and wonderful and faithful dog, “Evie.” Tiny also wanted to express her deepest love and appreciation to her niece, Deborah Smith (husband Lee, a.k.a. “Fester”) and extended families and friends for their continued love, support, and close family associations. She has now answered our good Lord’s call to return home and will be forever loved and missed by all. The family will receive friends at Hogg Funeral Home on Saturday, May 10, 2025, from 11:30 a.m.-12:45 p.m., followed by the chapel service, conducted by Pastor Steve Hassell, to begin at 1 p.m. Interment will follow in Rosewell Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Services under the direction of Hogg Funeral Home.
Tiny’s parting request is that y’all come dressed casually, jeans most welcome, to see her.
