Doris B. Hunley, 91, a longtime resident of Mathews passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 24, 2016.

Doris grew up on Gwynn’s Island where her father, the Rev. Iris Elmon Belch, served as pastor of Gwynn’s Island Baptist Church for 28 years. She was the eldest of three daughters of the Rev. Belch and his wife Bess, and she was the last surviving daughter. Her sister Anne passed away in 2005 and her youngest sister Nell in 2015.

Doris graduated from Mathews High School as valedictorian of her class. She retired from the Mathews Department of Social Services after 25 years of service.

The family would like to thank her many friends and relatives who visited and supported her over the last few years.

Doris was predeceased by her husband, Thomas S. Hunley Jr.

She is survived by her sons, Raymond A. Hunley of Mathews and Samuel R. Hunley (Linda) of Aiken, S.C. She also leaves behind her daughter-in-law, Marianne C. Hunley of Mathews, and five grandchildren, Lesley R. Hunley of Mathews, Matthew T. Hunley (Shuo) of Pennsylvania, Michael R. Hunley of Maryland, Josh M. Skeen of Atlanta, Georgia, Betty S. Gorinson (Hunter) of Cornwall, New York, and great-grandchild, Ingrid Gorinson.

A memorial service  was held on Saturday, August 27.
