Donk’s Theater comes back with an All-Star Opry Show

“The show must go on” takes on new meaning Saturday night, when Virginia’s Lil Ole Opry will kick off its “new beginning” for 2016 at 8 o’clock in Mathews High School with an All-Star Opry Show.

The show will feature the Opry’s talented cast members including master of ceremonies Uncle Jimmy Wickham, Lynda Smith, Richard Smith, Walt Stillman, Farren Winter, Ralph Motley and more, said spokesperson Betsy Ripley. In addition, the Opry will introduce two new members to the house band Shades of Country.

The Opry’s home since it opened in 1975, the Donk’s Theater building in Hudgins, was destroyed during a snow, sleet, wind and rainstorm in January.

The roof at Donk’s, a National Historic Landmark, collapsed, walls fell, and the wreckage was subsequently demolished with a number of souvenirs salvaged. These included mementoes of the Opry and the prominent marquee of the 1940s theater.
