American Legion Auxiliary Gloucester Unit 75 is seeking the public’s help in funding Gloucester High School students to attend this year’s Girl’s State. The American Legion Auxiliary began sponsoring the Girls State program in 1946. In Virginia, rising high school seniors spend a week in June at Longwood University, learning the way America’s government is formed and how it is run by its citizens. Delegates spend a day in Richmond, touring the Capitol and meeting the Governor. While at Longwood, the girls stay in the dormitories and have meals at the school. They are kept safe by the Virginia State Police. The cost of sending one delegate to Virginia Girls State is $535 and the Auxiliary relies on donations to help fund it. Traditionally, about 20 Gloucester High School students apply for the program each year. “The program is highly selective and choosing which girls get to go is very difficult; the more donations we receive, the more girls we are able to send,” a release stated.
