DeWitt to return as MHS baseball coach

By a 3-1 vote Tuesday night, the Mathews County School Board approved a number of personnel actions, including the appointment of Al DeWitt to the head baseball coaching position at Mathews High School for the coming spring season.

DeWitt served 18 years as a history teacher and MHS athletic director before leaving in 2007 to become activities director of a school in Woodbridge. He served in that post for several years before retiring and returning to Mathews. Last year, he was brought back to MHS as an assistant to athletic director Al Thomas.

DeWitt was also MHS head baseball coach for 16 seasons, guiding the Blue Devils to 217 wins, including the 2004 state championship.

At the school board’s August meeting, several parents and MHS baseball players addressed their concerns about the dismissal of current varsity and JV baseball coaches Pat Beattie and Billy Cook, who apparently had been notified by Thomas prior to that meeting that their services were no longer required.
