DEWEY MARCUS BARTLEY

Oct. 20, 1922-June 29, 2011

Dewey Marcus Bartley passed away peacefully on June 29, 2011, at Huntsville Hospital in Huntsville, Ala., at 88 years of age.

He was born on Oct. 20, 1922 at Bowling Fork, Ky., and was the son of Dixie and Alvin Bartley. He moved from Kentucky to Gloucester, Va., with his wife and their two daughters in 1963. They resided at Hayes, Va., until November 2010 before moving to Huntsville.

Mr. Bartley was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Dexter Cantrell; his brother, Willie Bartley, and his granddaughter, Lauren Bartley Marshall.

He is survived by his wonderful and caring wife of 63 years, Lucille Bowling Bartley; his sister, Lillian Bowling of Belleville, Mich.; his brother, Robert Bartley of Gloucester; his daughter, Donna Kaye Goodrich and husband Ralph of Charlotte, N.C., and his daughter, Portia Dischinger and husband Charlie of Huntsville. He was the proud grandfather of Michael Marshall and wife Becky, Lauren Marshall, Joshua Dischinger, and Matthew Dischinger, as well as the great-grandfather of Lexy Kaye Marshall. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, and cousins and by his faithful caregiver, Carol Warren.

Mr. Bartley served in World War II as a member of the 165th Engineer Combat Battalion in France, Germany, and Austria during 1944-1945, earning a Bronze Star. He worked as a coal miner in Kentucky and as a manufacturing plant foreman for Dow Chemical in Virginia before his retirement. Through the years, he loved his dogs very much and was an avid reader and Atlanta Braves fan. He grew up hunting and gardening, and he enjoyed both throughout his life, keeping his own garden even last summer as his strength failed. He valued his friends and neighbors greatly, and always tried to be a good neighbor.

Visitation with his family was held at All Saints Lutheran Church in South East Huntsville on Friday, July 1, from 6-8 p.m. A memorial service was held at All Saints Lutheran Church on Saturday, July 2, at 11 a.m. Interment was at Valhalla Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens in Huntsville at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 2, at the Veterans Cemetery.
