Devils turn on the offense in 7-2 win

The Mathews High School varsity soccer team visited the Northumberland Indians last Wednesday, coming home with a 7-2 win that more than offset the Devils’ season opening loss against Rappahannock.

An early goal scored by Chandler Brown that was assisted by Kevin Jenkins quickly put the Devils into a winning mindset. Later in the first half, Jenkins, Jordan Bozza and Mason Kemp scored, giving the Blue Devils a big lead.

This set the tone for most of the first half and along with a solid defense, kept the Indians in check.

With the defense led by Ricky Rutter, Josh Foster and Jack Vrooman, and Zach Foss protecting the goal, not very much reached the back of the Blue Devils’ net. The two shots that did get in were scored only because the North-
umberland offense had a couple lucky breakthroughs.
