Devils tie for district lead

The Mathews High School varsity baseball team had a good week, racking up two wins over Tidewater District foes. With the wins, Mathews pulled even with the King William Cavaliers in the race for the district title.

On Friday, the Devils took on their cross town rivals from Middlesex. Ryan Ewell gave up only one hit and struck out 13 for a 3-0 shutout victory over the visiting Chargers. Ewell had a no-hitter going until the top of the seventh when a Middlesex player hit one up the middle.

It was a scoreless game until the bottom of the fourth, when Ewell helped out his own cause by starting off the inning with a single. He eventually came around to score to put Mathews up, 1-0. Mathews added two insurance runs in the sixth inning, with Will Harrington and Chris Perreault scoring off a double by Chris Davis.

Mathews hits were contributed by Davis (2-for-4, double), Josh Wilson (1-for-2, triple), Austin Kemp (2-for-3), Ewell (2-for-3) and Harrington (1-for-2).
