Devils suffer injuries in scrimmage

Saturday night’s pre-season scrimmage game against Caroline County was a costly one for the Mathews High School varsity football team, with three key players—Antonio Smith, Nathan Shaw and M.J. Brooks—all going out with injuries.

Caroline County dominated the homestanding Devils, outscoring Mathews, 35-0, in the first half and keeping MHS from getting on the scoreboard through the rest of the game.

“The three young men and families are in our thoughts and prayers,” MHS head coach C.J. Kelly said. “We wish them all a speedy and full recovery. You never want to see anything happen to any player on the field.

“All three have worked extremely hard and the two seniors [Smith and Shaw], I just feel for them. We will know more about their situations and where everything stands in the next few days.
