Devils struggling to gain momentum

Over the course of the past week and a half, the varsity Blue Devils have posted a record of 1-2 in basketball. Mathews High defeated the Charles City Panthers, 56-28, lost to the King William Cavaliers, 39-30, and fell to the West Point Pointers, 65-53. 

The Devils started well, playing an overall great game on Jan. 20 against the weaker Panthers, who provided no real threat. Providing the defensive spark was freshman Elijah Willis, who forced many turnovers for easy baskets. Other leaders for the Devils were Cody Kelly and Owen Cullison. 

On Friday, the Devils hosted the King William Cavaliers. They had previously defeated the Cavaliers, 33-23, but this time was a different story. The Devils came out flat and went into the half only scoring seven points. Coming out into the second half, the Devils provided a spark for a very physical second half.
