Devils stay perfect in conference play

The Mathews High School varsity boys’ basketball team went 2-0 this past week, defeating King and Queen on Friday night and Charles City on Tuesday night in a pair of road games.

The 2-9 King and Queen Tigers came out for blood and were looking to do anything in order to break the Devils’ conference win streak.

Heading into halftime, the stunned Devils found themselves losing by six points. It was time to step up. The Devils found themselves tied heading into the fourth, and didn’t look back. Mathews eventually pulled away, winning the game, 61-49. Leaders were Johnson and Willis. Tuesday night was a similar story, as the winless Charles City Panthers were out for blood as well. The Panthers came out of the gate hot from the three-point line; however, their defensive strategy was not enough for the presence of junior forward Stuart Anderson.
