Devils split games in Lancaster tournament

Following a week off from school for spring break, the Mathews High School varsity boys’ baseball team traveled to Lancaster for the Dream Fields Invitational tournament.

The Devils squared off on Friday afternoon against the Washington and Lee Eagles. The Devils started off hot, and held a 7-0 lead in the second inning. This proved to be more than enough Willie Fernald went five strong innings, giving up only two runs. James Cook and Brian Owens finished the game off, and the Devils won, 8-2.

Saturday night was a different story. MHS faced off against the returning state champion Northumberland Indians, who were gaining momentum coming off a win on Friday night. The Indians’ bats came out on fire and due to some Devil miscues, took a 3-0 lead heading into the second inning. The struggles continued for the Devils offensively and defensively as they lost, 7-4. Owens took the loss. Offensive leaders were Logan Bell and Will Harrington.
