Devils post wins over Northumberland, Charles City

Two weeks into the 2019-2020 season, the Mathews High School varsity boys’ basketball team holds a 3-1 record, with the Devils posting two wins over Northumberland and a victory on Tuesday over Charles City.

The Blue Devils’ only loss came at the hands of the much larger 5A Nansemond River Warriors, and that game came down to the final minute of play.

Northumberland

Mathews kicked the season off on Dec. 3 at home against Northumberland. The Blue Devils came out playing aggressive defense which caused the Indians to turn the ball over, which led to easy shots in transition.

Mathews had a large lead at the half, even though they didn’t shoot well on the offensive side of the ball. But the Blue Devils kept the same intensity they had in the first half and ended up winning, 59-40. Leading scorers on the night were Landon Green with 12, Caleb Thomas with 11, and Braden Hunley and Justin Ashberry with eight apiece.
