Devils post 12-5 win over King William

The Mathews High School baseball team notched its first win on Tuesday, beating the King William Cavaliers on the road, 12-5. The Blue Devils opened the 2021 season on Monday, losing a 5-2 contest to the visiting Northumberland Indians.

Daniel Moughon was the winning pitcher in Tuesday’s King William game. Marc Smith had the big bat for Mathews, going 3-for-3 at the plate, scoring four runs and two RBIs and also drawing a walk. Dawson Adams was 2-for-5 with a pair of RBIs.

It was a different story on Monday as Mathews struggled offensively and committed four errors. Mathews batters collected only six hits against Northumberland. Isaac Cook was 1-for-3 and had the Devils’ only RBI. Aidan West was 1-for-4, scoring on a passed ball.

Smith was the pitcher of record for Mathews, giving up four runs (two earned) in three innings on the mound. Timmy Dehoux came on in relief, giving up four hits and one unearned run while recording four strikeouts in the remaining four innings.
