Devils pick up another win; improve to 4-1 on season

The Mathews High School varsity boys’ baseball team improved to 4-1 after defeating the Essex Trojans for a second time last Thursday night. Mathews fell behind early and battled back to win the 2-1 contest.

Will Harrington got his second win of the year, only giving up one run in five innings pitched. Offense was scattered for the Devils, as they did not record a hit until the fourth inning. They tied the game, 1-1, following a leadoff hit in the fifth inning by Brian Owens, driven in by Zack Jarosz.

Some defensive miscues and some stolen bases allowed for the Devils to scratch across one more, and they held on for the 2-1 win. James Cook got the save, throwing two innings in relief.

The Devils will play Washington and Lee and Northumberland in a spring break tournament this Friday and Saturday, looking to continue the momentum. ...
