Mathews High School fell to West Point last Wednesday in a triple-overtime basketball thriller, 90-87. After battling back and forth through regulation play, the Devils and host Pointers were tied at 66-66. The first overtime found the two teams knotted up at 76-76. Scoring was almost non-existent in the second overtime period, with the score 78-78. West Point finally pulled ahead in the third OT period, outscoring Mathews, 12-9.
The foul line was visited by many players. The Devils scored 19 points out of 34 trips to the line. West Point, meanwhile, scored 22 of 34 from the foul line.
Leading the way for Mathews was C.J. Kelly with an impressive 29 points. He was helped out by Chris Foster who scored 13 points. Deondre Foster ended the night with 12 points. Chase Kemp scored 10 points. Michael Cunningham scored nine points. Ross McLaughlin and Carter Vrooman scored six apiece. Deon Blake added two points.
Mathews traveled to Middlesex Friday to face the Chargers. The Devils came up short once again, falling 62-41.
Kelly had another impressive evening, scoring 20 points. Vrooman scored seven points. Kemp added four points. Foster scored three points. Derek Smoot, Deondre Foster and Deon Blake scored two apiece. Mathews hit five out of 10 from the line.
On Tuesday, Mathews fell to the Northumberland Indians, 66-49. Kelly had 21 points to lead the Devils, followed by Deondre Foster with nine. Rounding out the scoring were Vrooman (seven points), Cunningham (six points), Kemp (three), McLaughlin (two) and Chris Foster (one).
Mathews traveled to Essex last night and will play at King William on Friday.
