Devils lose heartbreaker to Raiders, beat Tigers

The Mathews High School varsity boys’ basketball team went 1-1 following the Christmas break, losing a 56-54 heartbreaker on Monday night to the Rappahannock Raiders and beating King and Queen on Tuesday, 63-54.

Tuesday night’s Tidewater District debut wasn’t a pretty game, as fouls, turnovers and a few missed calls made for a very long evening. MHS came out strong and took an early 23-12 lead. The Tigers retaliated by scoring 20 second-quarter points, and the teams were tied at 32-32 at halftime.

Mathews regained control in the second half, outscoring King and Queen 16-9 in the third quarter and 15-13 in the fourth. MHS managed to steal the ball from King and Queen six times with three minutes on the clock.
