Devils lose a tough one on the road

The Mathews High School varsity baseball team suffered a tough 3-2 loss on the road Tuesday night against the Washington and Lee Eagles.

The Eagles’ first batter led off with double, eventually coming around to score. Errors in the first inning killed the Devils as W&L pulled ahead, 2-0.

After that it was a pitchers’ duel until the fifth when the MHS boys’ bats finally woke up. Brandon Williams, who led off with a single, stealing second and third and eventually coming home to score on Tyler Moore’s ground-out RBI.

In the same inning, Ethan Armistead hit a single into the right center gap. He stole second as well. Brent Smith hit a double down the line scoring Armistead to make the score 3-2 in the Eagles’ favor. In the top of the seventh, Zach Dehoux led off with a single. However, the next batter hit into a double play that ended a possible rally.
