Devils knocked out of playoffs by snow

The Mathews High School varsity boys’ basketball team won its only post-season game last week, but that wasn’t good enough for the team to continue on into the playoffs.

Mathews defeated Chesterfield Community, 62-46, last Wednesday night in front of a home crowd, hours before a heavy snowfall put an end to the rest of the Conference 42 tournament.

Mathews held a narrow halftime lead and pulled away from the visiting Eagles in the second half. Reggie Johnson had the hot hand for the Devils, scoring 25 points.

Unfortunately, the snow that arrived later that night proved to be a tougher opponent for the Devils. Conference 42 officials voted to cancel the remainder of the tournament and send the top two regular season seeds ahead into the 1A East Regional tournament. The Devils finished as the third seed, and that decision put an unexpected and disappointing end to their season.
