Devils host Cavaliers in benefit scrimmage game Friday

Mathews High School will host the Caroline High School Cavaliers in a scrimmage game to benefit MHS athletics starting at 6 p.m. Friday on Ken Brown Field as the Blue Devils gear up for their Aug. 30 season opener.

The two varsity teams will face off, with the JV squads serving as special teams. Tickets are $5.

The Mathews varsity and JV teams had their first scrimmage on Aug. 16 at Colonial Beach. “Friday’s scrimmage got off to slow start,” MHS varsity head coach C.J. Kelly said. “We progressed as the scrimmage went on. Our offense made a few plays and the defense had its moments.”

“We want to use this [Caroline] game to put us into a rhythm and be ready for our season opener on the 30th,” Kelly said. The Blue Devils travel to Middlesex on Friday, Aug. 30 to face the Chargers, with a 7 o’clock kickoff. ...
