Devils go 3-1 in busy week on the diamond

The Blue Devils earned three wins and suffered one loss in a busy week on the diamond for the Mathews High School varsity baseball team.

Mathews started last week on the road against the Middlesex Chargers. The Devils jumped to an early five-run lead in the top of the first inning, going on to win last Thursday’s contest, 7-1. As usual, the pitchers did their job and the defense backed them up. In the bottom of the seventh, the Chargers broke up the shutout.

The following day MHS hosted Chincoteague. The Devils defeated the Eastern Shore visitors, 5-1. The Ponies struck first with an RBI single in the top of the third, but the Devils didn’t get discouraged and kept fighting. They put four of their own runs across the board in the bottom of the fourth, by stringing base hits together and executing with runners in scoring position.
