Devils finish season strong

The Mathews High School varsity boys’ baseball team has improved its overall record to 15-3, by defeating West Point, Nandua, and Middlesex this past week. The Devils move to 6-0 in Conference 42 play and enter the tournament next week as the number-one seed.

The Devils traveled to West Point last Thursday night. Brian Owens was on the hill for the Devils, and after a shaky start he found his groove. The Devils went scoreless through two innings, and then in the third, they finally provided some offense. Marshall Barrack hit a triple to lead the rally, followed by hits from Ethan Armistead, Brett Hogge, and Reggie Johnson. This lead was enough for Owens, as the Devils ran away with it, winning by an overall score of 11-3.

On Monday night, Nandua came to town. The Warriors had not previously been beaten by the Devils in coach Derek Kibler’s time at MHS. They struck first in the top of the first off starting pitcher Willie Fernald who went 6 2/3 innings and only allowed one...
