Devils fall to Tigers, 70-65; face W&L Friday

The Mathews High School varsity boys’ basketball team closed out its 2018-2019 regular season last Wednesday and began post-season play on Monday.

Although Mathews fell to King and Queen by a 70-65 margin in Monday’s Tidewater District semifinals, the playoffs continue for the Blue Devils, who are scheduled to travel to Montross on Friday to compete in the Region A tournament against Washington and Lee.

The MHS boys finished the regular season last Wednesday at home, hosting the Lancaster Red Devils. The two teams had not met since Mathews’ season debut, in which Lancaster earned a comfortable win. The game was played with a much slower pace than before, which resulted in a lower score for both sides, but the Red Devils prevailed once again, this time 55-44. Lancaster hung on to a slim five-point lead, and sealed the game with free throws in the final minutes.
