Devils fall to Panthers, 56-6

The Mathews High School varsity football team fell to 3-6 on the season following Friday night’s 56-6 loss on the road to the Charles City Panthers.

The Blue Devils will close out the 2016 regular season tonight when they host the Middlesex Chargers, starting at 7 o’clock. Tonight’s game at Ken Brown Field is also the team’s Senior Night—with senior athletes honored—as well as the 46th annual Mathews Ruritan Bowl game.

On Friday night, quarterback Stuart Anderson provided the only scoring for Mathews on a 15-yard keeper in the opening minute of the first quarter of the chilly game.  

Anderson ended the night with 45 rushing yards, followed by Jarius Monroe with 37 rushing yards, Jovan Johnson with 31 yards and Alec Thompson with 20. Monroe had 15 receiving yards and Anderson passed for 25 yards.
