Devils fall to King William 4-2 in soccer

In the final match before spring break, the Mathews High School varsity soccer team lost a 4-2 contest on the road to the King William Cavaliers. The Devils’ junior varsity counterparts fared better, shutting out the Cavaliers, 6-0.

The game started out well for the Devils, who managed to keep possession of the ball fairly well. Momentum began to turn as the game progressed, and the Cavaliers drew first blood in the 29th minute, scoring a header off a corner kick.

King William managed to put one more in the back of the net before halftime, scoring on a breakaway. Trailing by two goals to start the second half, Mathews stepped up its energy. Five minutes into the period, a goal was scored by Sawyer Hutson, who buried a shot in the back of the net following a deflection from Kayla Stearns.
