Devils fall to Indians, beat Wolverines

The Mathews High School boys’ varsity basketball team split a pair of home games last week to round out the regular season, falling to Northumberland, 65-59, on Wednesday night and beating Carver Academy, 55-43, on Thursday.

Mathews ended the regular season with an overall record of 12-10; 11-1 in the Tidewater District.

The MHS boys will begin post-season play on Friday when they host the Middlesex Chargers in the first round of the regional tournament, starting at 8 p.m.

Wednesday’s game started out offensive heavy, with both teams putting points on the board. However, Mathews gave up several fast-break points to their opponents, and soon found themselves trailing; the Indians led by 12 points at the half.

Mathews was not going away easily though, stepping up the intensity in the third quarter and closing the gap. Better transition defense and more fast-break opportunities for Mathews led to the momentum swing. Mathews closed the gap to four points in the fourth quart...
