Devils fall to Essex in post-season play

The Mathews High School baseball season came to an abrupt end last Thursday as the Devils fell, 12-1, to the Essex Trojans in the first round of the Region 1A tournament.
The game had originally been scheduled to be held on May 25 at MHS; however, wet field conditions forced the postponement and the Mathews fields were still not ready by Thursday, so the contest was moved to Essex High School.
“It was a very disappointing last game,” said MHS head coach Al DeWitt, as Essex knocked Mathews out of the playoffs for a second year in a row. “We just did not play up to the effort and performance we did the two times we beat them in the regular season. Essex is a good baseball team and it is hard to beat a good team three times in one season,” DeWitt added.
In spite of the loss, Mathews finished the season with a 13-7 record, was the fourth seed in the Region 1A playoffs and will have seven returning players for next season.
