Devils fall to Chargers in finale, 14-7

The Mathews High School varsity football season came to an end last Thursday at Middlesex High School. Although the Blue Devils lost that contest, 14-7, and missed out a playoff berth, the squad showed marked improvement from the previous year.

Mathews ended the year with a 4-6 record. Last year, the team was 2-8 overall, with those two victories coming in the season’s final two games.

In last Thursday’s season finale, neither team managed to get on the scoreboard in the first half. Josh Foster scored the only touchdown for Mathews, with Tim White adding the PAT kick. In the game, Stuart Anderson made an interception. Alec Thompson had about 90 yards rushing. Reggie Johnson added about 60 rushing yards, also picking up a sack. Drew Hudgins recovered a fumble and made a sack.
