Devils fall to Cavs, beat Eagles

The Mathews High School varsity baseball team split a pair of home games last week, falling to King William on Thursday, 4-0, and crushing the Washington and Lee Eagles on Friday, 11-1.

Errors were the difference for Mathews in the King William game. Three defensive miscues led to three unearned runs. Will Harrington went four innings on the mound, giving up the three unearned runs and was tagged with the loss. Willie Fernald pitched the last three innings, giving up one run

Offensive leaders for Mathews included Reggie Johnson (1-for-3, double), Logan Bell (1-for-3), Taiwan Forrest (1-for-1) and Brian Owens (1-for-2).

It was a different story the following day, as Mathews put together its best game of the year, according to head coach Derek Kibler. Owens pitched a complete game, striking out six and walking only two to improve his season record to 3-1. Defensively, the Devils had no errors.
