Devils fall to Cavaliers, 55-20

While the Mathews High School varsity football team continues to show improvement, the Devils have yet to defeat an opponent on the gridiron. On Friday, King William hosted the Devils for the Cavaliers’ homecoming game, taking a 55-20 win.

Mathews got on the scoreboard in the first quarter with Jarius Monroe scoring on a 77-yard kickoff return. In the second quarter, receiver Elijah Willis caught a 32-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Monroe. The Devils’ final touchdown came in the fourth quarter when receiver Justin Ashberry caught a 60-yard TD pass from Monroe.

Monroe ended the game with 105 passing yards. Running back Jovan Johnson had 59 rushing yards and Ashberry had 60 receiving yards.
